Talking about IRC, there is this project that uses AT-protocol for auth, and IRC: freeq.at by @chadfowler.com Wouldn't it be nice if it became mainstream? 😃

Honestly, there’s a super long tail of features, but permissioned data and notifications gets us a long way there. @chadfowler.com’s @freeq.at might be complete enough for chat? The hard part for Discord is that there are a lot of people with sidebars filled with non-ATProto servers.

@chadfowler.com's @freeq.at could go this direction, if you squint @zed.dev has already been doing much of this, what would it take for OpenCode to go multiplayer? atproto is an excellent open account system to tie things together. Now all we need is permissioned data.

Kudos to @chadfowler.com for having reduced the scope of token needed to authenticate with freeq.at ! I missed IRC's simplicity and having a way to use it along with ATProto sounds like a fantastic combo.
